Solisto was developed at the Kagoshima Kawauchi Plant in 1960, initially planned by a publishing sales representative. At the time, bulky book paper was made with ground pulp (GP), which gave thickness at low basis weight but caused fading due to its high lignin content. In collaboration with the Kawauchi Mill and publishers, they refined the paper through multiple trials and, in 2002, created a bulky book paper that resists fading. They named it "Solisto" to symbolize their hope that publishers would express themselves freely like soloists. In an ink test by Yamamoto Shigyo, even low-viscosity ink stayed absorbed without bleeding or back-stripping. The textured paper absorbs ink well, making colors appear richer and darker.
